Shapes of Imagination
Within this body of work, I am investigating how line, shape, and color have endless possibilities when combined and are deliberately or randomly manipulated. I am combining multiple individually designed panels that I sketch at random into a bigger new picture. From there I use my own set of rules and intuitions to color and further push the design into a finished artwork. It goes one step further with the shaped substrates becoming canvases themselves.
The process behind these artworks represents the evolution of myself as an artist during my academic time at SCAD. None of this process would have occurred without my peers and teacher’s suggestions. As a sophomore, I began to always carry around a small bound sketchbook and a pen to doodle with everywhere I went. In my junior year, I began taking pictures of my sketchbook doodles and turning them into patterns digitally. Finally, in senior year abstract class, we were asked to create shaped substrates and paint on them. So, my doodles turned into cut-out shapes that could hang on the wall. However, it wasn’t until the end of my career at SCAD that I thought to combine the shaped substrates and the designed patterns into larger-scale works.
To me, the very fact the paintings and shapes are patterns draws the viewer closer, encouraging them to observe how the work changes from different perspectives. This work is important to me not only because it signifies the culmination of my academic journey at SCAD but also because it represents my growth as an artist throughout this time. This body of work stands as a testament to my artistic evolution, inviting viewers to engage with the dynamic interplay of elements and witness the progression of my creative process.
